How Does RightsLink Work?
Locate Content: Locate on the American Association for the Advancement of Science's (AAAS) Science Magazine website (http://www.sciencemag.org) the content you wish to reuse.
Launch RightsLink: Click the Permissions link associated with the article you have just located. This will launch the RightsLink service.
Quick Price: Follow the simple instructions to obtain a Quick Price quotation. The price you are charged involves many variables, such as number of pages of content being reused, requestor type, quantity, and a fee set by AAAS. In some cases there is no fee, but you will still obtain a permission agreement from AAAS. Place Order: To place your order, you will be prompted to set up an account or confirm/edit account information; confirm your order; confirm your payment method; and accept the terms and conditions.
Order Confirmation: An order confirmation is displayed listing the details of your RightsLink order. It offers additional links for viewing the terms and conditions, editing your account information, and editing your order specifications.

Text Excerpt: Text Excerpts are a portion of a AAAS article. Fractions of a page are counted as one page. For quotations of less than 50 words, no permission is needed, although AAAS asks that a proper reference citation noting the Author(s) and the AAAS article accompany the quotation. It is your responsibility to ensure that the material is original to AAAS and does not contain the copyright of another entity or reference that it was reprinted with permission from another source.
Figure/Table: Set of data, including tables, illustrations, or photos presented in AAAS content to illustrate textual material (Permissions granted by AAAS do not apply to figures / photos / artwork or any other content or materials included in your work that are credited to non-AAAS sources. If the requested material is sourced to or references non-AAAS sources, you must obtain authorization from that source as well before using that material). You are permitted to translate into the language of your publication the caption associated with the figure or table being licensed at no additional cost.
Full Text: The full text of the article, including tables, figures, and extracts
Requestor type defines the type of organization that will be using the licensed content. American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) requires this information to drive its business rules regarding the granting of licenses.
Author of the AAAS paper: You are listed as an Author of the AAAS published paper that is being reused.
Other Individual: Not an author of the AAAS published content, but an individual who is writing an article/work or editing a new work (but not an employee of the work’s publisher and not a contractor working on behalf of a non-commercial or commercial organization/publisher).
Academic/Non-Commercial: Non-profit publishers, schools, universities, associations and non-commercial organizations or individuals working on their behalf who do not meet the “Author of the AAAS paper” or “Other Individual” criteria.
Commercial: Commercial / For-profit publishers (e.g. McGraw-Hill, Nature Group, Elsevier) or other corporate entities (e.g. Pharmas, BlackBoard, XanEdu) or individuals working on their behalf who do not meet the “Author of the AAAS paper” or “Other Individual” criteria

A type of use describes what you may wish to do with copyrighted content and what the publisher permits. American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) offers the following types of use either directly through RightsLink or after approval by AAAS. If permission is granted for use of a Text Excerpt or for Full Text, then permission is granted for non-exclusive world rights in English language only. You have the option of securing either print or electronic rights alone or both. Separate fees are assessed for each format. Permission for translations of text excerpts or full text articles into other languages must be reviewed internally by AAAS before permission will be granted.License granted for use of AAAS material in electronic format books/textbooks are valid only in cases where the electronic version is equivalent to or substitutes for the print version and where the AAAS material reproduced as permitted remains in situ and is not exploited separately (for example, if permission covers the use of a full text article, the article may not be offered for access or for purchase as a stand-alone unit), except in the case of permitted textbook companions as noted below. Coursepacks or Course Websites: These rights cover use of the AAAS material in one class at one institution. Permission is valid only for a single semester after which the AAAS material must be removed from the Electronic Course website, unless new permission is obtained for an additional semester. Journals: Permission covers both print and electronic versions of your journal or magazine article, however the AAAS material may not be used in any manner other than within the context of your article. Requests to republish Full Text articles in journals or magazines must be reviewed internally by AAAS. If permission is granted for Full Text use, rights are limited to one-time use in a particular issue of your journal or magazine and may be limited to print format only. Back to top
Movies / Film / Television: Permission is granted to use, record, film, photograph, and/or tape the AAAS material in connection with your program/film and in any medium your program/film may be shown or heard, including but not limited to broadcast and cable television, radio, print, world wide web, and videocassette. Museum Exhibitions: Permission is granted to use the AAAS material as part of a single exhibition for the duration of that exhibit. If permission to use a full text article is permitted, The Science article covered by this permission must not be altered in any way. No additional printing may be set onto an article copy other than the copyright credit line required above. Any alterations must be approved in advance and in writing by AAAS. This includes, but is not limited to, the placement of sponsorship identifiers, trademarks, logos, rubber stamping or self-adhesive stickers onto the article copies. Additionally, article copies must be a freestanding part of any information package (i.e. media kit) into which they are inserted. If you are an Author of the AAAS Published Paper, please refer to your License to Publish for rules on reproducing your paper in a dissertation or thesis. Standard: Standard Reprints are processed within 8 to 12 business days from proof approval. Please allow at least one month from the time your request is submitted. Note: Reprint customizations increase processing time
Rush: Rush Reprints are processed within 5 to 7 business days from proof Approval.
Proof: Every reprint requires the approval of the customer prior to printing and billing. Proofs will be provided by an AAAS Commercial Reprints Representative .
Shipping: Shipping costs are not included in the Quick Price quote. An estimated shipping price is displayed on the order confirmation page before the completion of the order. Billing: Billing does not occur (credit card is not charged / invoice account not debited) until reprints are printed.
Binding: Reprints are bound using saddle stitch binding unless article is four pages or less in which case the reprint is folded.
Color: Select Color for your reprint to be printed in color, or B&W for your reprint to be printed in black and white. If the original article contains color there will be an additional charge of $100 per article page for conversion to black and white. Select "yes" if your article is originally in color and you would like to convert it to grayscale. Color graphics can be converted to grayscale for printing in black and white for an additional charge of $100 per article page.
Paper Weight and Type: 70 pound glossy for both reprint and cover.
Code: Select code location to have custom literature code printed on lower left or right corner of outermost page of reprint. You will be contacted by an AAAS Commercial Reprints Representative to provide the literature code.
Cover: Select the type of cover. Reprints may be printed without a cover, with a Title page, or with the Journal Issue cover. If the journal cover is selected, there will be a $100 additional fee. Journal cover will appear in black & white or color, depending on whether the reprints are ordered as color reprints or black and white reprints. Science does not own the rights to every issue cover - if journal cover is selected your request will go through a copyright clearance step and you will be notified about the available options. A journal cover or title page is not required.
Disclaimer/Other: Select Disclaimer Text location to have custom disclaimer text printed on the center middle of the last outermost page, or at the lower right corner of the back outermost page. You will be contacted by an AAAS Commercial Reprints Representative to provide disclaimer text.
Logo: Logo Standards: PDF files are the preferred format; EPS and TIFF files are acceptable. All files must be high resolution, at least 266 dpi for color and gray tones, 500 dpi for combination text and tone images and 900 dpi for line art. All color must be CMYK (no RGB). All fonts must be embedded. You will be contacted by an AAAS Commercial Reprints Representative and provide the logo at that time.
Product Insert: Product Inserts are additional marketing material. You provide the insert or request AAAS to print it. To include a product insert in the reprint, select yes and an AAAS Commercial Reprint Sales Representative will contact you directly for the insert, the preferred manner of the insertion, and the price. Note: If you select yes, a quick price will not be displayed.
Shrink Wrap: Reprints are grouped in bundles of 25, 50, or 100 using a clear plastic film for an additional fee. Shrink wrap is also available in custom bundles; you will be contacted by a Commercial Reprints Representative for further details and additional cost.
Supplemental Material: Supplemental Online Material can be added. To include supplemental online material with the reprint, select yes and an AAAS Commercial Reprint Sales Representative will contact you directly for the material and with a price.
